The purpose of this book is to provide a safe space for discussion around the topic of the deconstruction of Christianity. As with many subjects in this global era, there seem to be two opposing poles of view that are actually either end of a spectrum. These range from those who equate deconstruction with destruction to those who are throwing out faith completely. However, there are far more people finding themselves somewhere in between these extremes. They are trying to deal with inconsistencies and tension in their faith, all the while realising that they are in something of a no man’s land, often under fire from both sides.
This book seeks to not only clarify what is meant by deconstruction, but also discuss some of the aspects of Christianity that so many struggle with. It is not the author’s intention to tell you what to believe or even justify these beliefs, but to simply pull them out of the closet and reassess the place, function and ramifications they have. Much of this work is based on Ruth’s own journey, thoughts, understandings and observations, and she is the first to tell you that she is not finished yet.

Many of us joke about being control freaks, while the rest hide our need to be in control deep inside. Let’s face it - the simple idea of being out of control generally leaves us feeling unsafe and anxious at the very least. We live out of a belief that if we don’t keep the reins of control tight, our world will explode. I know this has caused issues for me in many aspects of my life. Whether it be in my own emotions, in life circumstances, or in the actions of others, there have been numerous occasions when I have found my control has been a mere illusion. In His goodness, though, God has put His finger on this desire to control my world and my circumstances and shown me another way of living. The journey through this process has been quite painful at times. I liken it to when you have been clenching your hands to the wheel, desperately holding on for far too long. You need to prise your fingers loose but they are numb and aching at the same time. However, I have learnt that the agony of letting go is rarely as bad as the pain of holding on, and the healing and freedom I have found on the other side is well worth the pain. Some of my story may resonate with you. Some aspects may challenge you. My hope is that it further inspires your confidence in a good God who loves to give us healing, true freedom and increasingly abundant life!

This book comes with a warning. If you are looking for answers or proofs for set positions, either theologically or socially, you may not find them here. Rather, the purpose is to prompt the questions we often fail to ask; to create a place where aspects of faith and culture we take for granted as truth, or are prescribed to us as truth, are opened up for discussion and examination to determine whether they actually stand up to close scrutiny.
We live in an era where many seem to be throwing out much of what we have believed as truth or culturally acceptable in the past in exchange for something new and progressive. When there are so many voices shouting that their way is the only right way, it is vitally important that we reassess our foundations. Are we really standing on what we think we are? And are these foundations actually stable or sufficient for the way ahead?
Untruth explores these questions and others to help open the way for conversation, greater understanding and increased certainty around what we do believe is truth and, more importantly, why we believe it is truth.
